A violent confrontation erupted in Oba, Anambra State, following an incident where tipper drivers reportedly hit members of the Special Anti-Touting Squad Anambra (SASA). In response, hundreds of armed Oba youths launched a deadly attack on Sasa operatives, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries.
Before the attack, Sasa operatives reportedly apprehended members of a criminal gang operating in Oba. The arrested suspects allegedly confessed to various crimes and revealed that the tipper garage in Oba was a base for their remaining gang members. The location was described as a notorious hub for criminal activities and drug trafficking in the state.
The suspects further named alleged sponsors of the attack, including Chibon Hotel, Kaima Hotel, the Chaiman Oba Youth, the Tipper Chairman, and a figure identified as Ocha Abinno.
Karen James, spokesperson for Sasa, confirmed that investigations are ongoing. “All those involved in this matter will be brought to book,” she assured.
Karen James also alleged that tipper drivers are contributing funds to influence journalists in a bid to tarnish the image of Sasa and obscure the truth from the public. “We are aware of attempts to spread false narratives, but we remain committed to justice and transparency,” she added.
The tipper garage in Oba has long been a source of concern for residents due to its reputation as a hideout for criminal activities. The incident has heightened community tensions, with calls for immediate security intervention and a thorough investigation into the allegations.
Community leaders, stakeholders, and Sasa operatives have urged law enforcement agencies to investigate the attack and bring both the perpetrators and alleged sponsors to justice.
The unfolding situation highlights the urgent need for heightened security measures and a transparent investigation to ensure peace and accountability in the area.
