The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 49-year-old Nnamdi Anyaji, who allegedly murdered his 68-year-old mother, Mrs. Dorathy Anyaji, before attempting to take his own life in Amudo Village, Ekwulobia.

The disturbing incident occurred on April 11, 2025, at about 1:40 pm and was swiftly responded to by operatives attached to the Ekwulobia Divisional Police Station. Upon arrival at the scene, officers apprehended the suspect and recovered an axe, believed to have been used in the crime.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the confrontation began after the suspect accused his mother of dishonesty over proceeds from a cassava business. The suspect is currently in custody and under close monitoring to prevent another suicide attempt. He will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
In a separate development on the same day, Police Operatives from the Special Anti-Cultism Squad, Enugu-Ukwu, acting on credible intelligence, raided a criminal drug hub at Umuokpala Village in Orumba North Local Government Area.

During the raid, twelve suspects were arrested while allegedly engaging in the sale and consumption of hard drugs. The police also recovered sizable quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, other illicit substances, and incriminating items.
The arrested suspects, all male and aged between 20 and 29, include:
Ifeanyi Bernard, Emmanuel Ugwu, Thankgod Kelechi, Umeh Chidera, Aguiyi Onyeka, Onyeka Martin, Festus Ihezie, Chibundu Nicholas, Solomon Obiefule, Chibundu Daniel, Neke Shedrack, and Nwazufu Kingsley.
The suspects and the recovered exhibits have since been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer, reiterated the Command’s commitment to tackling crime and ensuring the safety of all residents in Anambra State.
