The bustling metropolis of Boji Boji Agbor witnessed a harrowing tragedy on Sunday as a diesel-laden tanker lost control and crashed into a concrete road divider, sparking a devastating explosion. The inferno, which occurred around 12 p.m. at the former Mobil Traffic Light Area, claimed three lives, while reducing nearby banks, shops, and parked vehicles to ashes.
The tragic accident sent shockwaves across the city, causing widespread panic as flames quickly engulfed the area. Among the structures damaged were the buildings housing First Bank and Access Bank, further exacerbating the extent of the destruction.
Hon. Hunkamma Monday Odigwe, Chair of Ika Northeast Local Council Government, and Hon. Engr. Jerry Ehiwarior swiftly mobilized local security agencies and firefighters to the scene. Despite their efforts, it took more than three hours to contain the raging flames. Public-spirited individuals also joined in battling the inferno, preventing the fire from spreading further.
Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident, expressing condolences for the lives lost and the extensive property damage. “First Bank Agbor and Access Bank Agbor were among the buildings affected by the fire. The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed,” he said.
Eyewitnesses described the chaotic moments after the crash, with residents and business owners scrambling to save their belongings. Shops in the vicinity suffered significant losses, leaving many devastated by the unexpected tragedy.
As investigations into the cause of the accident continue, local authorities have urged citizens to exercise caution and assist in providing any useful information about the incident. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to support victims and assess the full scale of the damage.
