The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and Catholic Diocese of Nnewi following the tragic murder of Rev. Fr. Tobias Chukwujekwu Okonkwo. The Catholic priest was killed by unknown gunmen on the evening of December 26, 2024, along the Onitsha–Owerri Road in Ihiala.
In an official statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Commissioner described the incident as a grievous loss and assured the public that the Anambra State Police Command is committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.
“The Command shall leave no stone unturned in unmasking the assailants responsible for this heinous crime,” CP Itam stated. He further called on members of the public to assist the investigation by providing any relevant information, assuring that all tips will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
Fr. Tobias, a respected priest in his community, was known for his service as the Manager of the Schools of Nursing, Midwifery, and Medical Laboratory at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala. His death has sparked widespread mourning and heightened concerns over security along the Onitsha–Owerri Road, a notorious hotspot for violent crimes.
The police have reiterated their commitment to restoring public safety and urged residents to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station. “Further developments on the investigation will be communicated,” SP Ikenga added.
The Catholic Diocese of Nnewi and the grieving community continue to call for justice and prayers for the soul of the late priest. Meanwhile, the state government and security agencies face mounting pressure to address the worsening security challenges in the region.
