The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the removal of Anambra State’s Commissioner of Police, Obong Nnache Itam, amidst growing security challenges and public outcry over criminal activities in the state. These issues include rampant kidnappings, cult-related violence, and attacks by unknown gunmen.
The decision was made public on Wednesday through a statement issued by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations at the PSC. In the statement, Ani also announced the appointment of CP Livingstein Ikioye Orutugu, formerly with the Bayelsa State Police Command, as the new Anambra Police Commissioner.

According to the statement, the Commission’s Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Hashimu Argungu, urged the newly appointed CPs to immediately take up their posts and ensure there are no gaps that could lead to further breakdowns of law and order.
“The new Commissioners should quickly settle down to their new duty posts and ensure there is no gap that may necessitate a breakdown of law and order,” Argungu stated. “They must be dedicated and committed to duty and assist in ensuring that Nigeria is freed from the menace of bandits and deviants.”
He emphasized that the PSC would closely monitor the new CPs’ performance to ensure they succeed in their new roles.
The Commission’s decision has already been communicated to the Inspector General of Police for immediate implementation.
Reports indicate that CP Itam’s removal is linked to concerns over his performance since assuming office on May 13, 2024, as Anambra’s 34th Commissioner of Police. His tenure was marked by increasing security threats and growing dissatisfaction from residents over the state’s handling of criminal activities.
With CP Orutugu now at the helm, residents of Anambra State are hopeful for a more aggressive and effective approach to combating crime and restoring public confidence in the police force.
