An exclusive investigation by Pechilly Investigative has exposed a disturbing collaboration between the Anti-Terrorist Squad of the police and a group of thugs engaged in systematic extortion of motorcycle riders and motorists at the Head Bridge, Onitsha. The revelation has sparked widespread outrage and unrest, culminating in a violent clash that left one person dead.
According to the findings, thugs identified as Peace Enemona, Peter Isaiah Chima, Godwin Gber, and Chigbo Odom were reportedly contracted by police operatives to extort money from road users. The extortion scheme allegedly involved collecting ₦300 from each motorcycle rider and ₦500 from motorists, with the thugs required to provide daily financial accounts to the Anti police terrorizing squad.
Speaking anonymously, one of the thugs admitted to the arrangement, stating, “The police Anti-Terrorist Squad instructed us to collect money from motorcycle and vehicle drivers and report back to them daily.”
The investigation further revealed that tensions erupted when some road users resisted the extortion, leading to a clash between the thugs and members of the public. The altercation reportedly turned deadly, with one person fatally injured in the chaos.
Residents and road users expressed outrage at the revelations, accusing the Anti-Terrorist Squad of betraying public trust and undermining their duty to protect citizens.
In response, public calls have intensified for the Anambra State Police Command to investigate the allegations and bring those responsible to justice.
As the scandal unfolds, the Commissioner of Police has yet to issue an official statement. Meanwhile, civil rights groups and transport unions are demanding immediate reforms and accountability to prevent further abuse of power and exploitation of motorists.
