In a major crackdown on crime in Anambra State, over 200 individuals have been arrested for various offenses in the past 60 days. The State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, made this announcement during a press briefing held at the State Police Command Headquarters in Amawbia.
CP Itam also revealed that the Command has achieved five convictions in the past two months, with ongoing trials for several other suspects. In addition, the police have successfully rescued four kidnapping victims unharmed.
The impressive efforts of the police force have resulted in the recovery of an extensive array of illegal firearms. Over thirty-three different brands of arms, including AK47 rifles, pump-action guns, and locally made pistols, have been seized. Furthermore, authorities have confiscated 1,644 types of ammunition, 27 stolen vehicles, various motorcycles, and substantial amounts of money, among other exhibits.
Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the Commissioner of Police, CP Itam credited the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for his appointment. He praised the state’s Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo CFR, for his commitment to ensuring the safety of the residents.
CP Itam emphasized the Command’s dedication to restructure the security governance architecture in the state. The police have been actively engaging in intelligence gathering, collaborating with security agencies, vigilante groups, and other stakeholders. They have also conducted a security summit, involving various community leaders and youth groups, to enhance an all-inclusive approach to policing.
To tackle the issue of professional misconduct within the police force, the Command has revived the Complaint Response Unit (CRU). This unit will ensure that officers adhere to ethical standards and promptly investigate any complaints against them.
Furthermore, the recent signing of the Anti-cultism Law by the State Government is seen as a significant development in the fight against cult-related activities. The law stipulates a minimum jail term of 21 years with no option of fine for anyone found guilty of involvement in such activities. The police will actively promote the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) to educate the youth about the dangers of joining harmful groups and engaging in illicit activities.
CP Itam extended his gratitude to journalists in Anambra for their effective and transparent reporting, recognizing them as essential partners in maintaining peace and security in the state. However, he expressed concern about the circulation of security-related videos on social media and advised journalists to verify the authenticity of such content before sharing it.
The ongoing efforts and achievements of the Anambra State Police Command indicate a significant step forward in the fight against crime and the establishment of a safer environment for the residents.
