ONITSHA — Tragedy struck in the bustling commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State, on Thursday, May 16, 2025, when a gas cylinder explosion claimed one life and left five others critically injured.

According to a statement issued by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the explosion occurred at a plumbing market along Uga Street. The incident happened while a welder was working on a metal, causing the gas cylinder to explode due to excessive heat.
“Police operatives attached to the Onitsha Head Bridge Divisional Headquarters swiftly joined rescue efforts initiated by good-spirited individuals to save the six victims,” Ikenga said. “Unfortunately, one of the victims succumbed to injuries and has been deposited in a morgue, while the others are receiving treatment in the hospital.”
In the aftermath, police have secured the area to prevent criminal elements from exploiting the situation. The State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, expressed concern over the incident and emphasized the importance of safety measures in handling gas equipment.
He urged residents and business operators to regularly inspect and maintain gas cylinders, store them securely, and follow manufacturers’ safety instructions to avoid future occurrences.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as investigations into the exact cause of the explosion proceed.
