Says The House Of Assembly Operates Within The Constitutional Provisions
In light of recent speculations of a crisis in the Anambra State House of Assembly, the Speaker, Rt.Hon.Somtochukwu Udeze, has assured the citizens that there is absolutely no cause for alarm. He emphasized that the Assembly operates within the boundaries of the constitution and is empowered to make laws regarding the conduct of local government elections and general administration of the councils.
Addressing the recent announcement of the local government election in the state by the State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) and the subsequent amendment of relevant sections of the ANSIEC law by the State Assembly, Rt.Hon.Udeze explained that the amendment was necessary to align the law with the current realities, as the last Local Government Election in the state had been held over ten years ago.
The Speaker dismissed the reports circulating on social media as unfounded and diversionary, reiterating that the amendment of certain sections of the ANSIEC law was supported by a majority of lawmakers who recognized its merits. He commended the lawmakers for their dedication to championing the interests of the people through their legislative engagements.
Rt.Hon.Udeze called on those undermining the integrity of the Anambra State Assembly to cease their actions, as such acts only serve to hinder the progress of the state. He emphasized that the 8th Anambra State House of Assembly, under his leadership, operates as an independent arm of government, free from any external influence or control.
Furthermore, the Speaker promised that the Assembly is committed to making significant contributions towards the peace and development of Anambra State. With the amendment of the ANSIEC law, it is expected that the smooth running of the twenty-one Local Government Areas in the state will be ensured, ultimately benefiting the people of Anambra.
