The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Anambra State Chapter, in collaboration with the wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has commemorated the 2025 International Women’s Day with a passionate call for women to support and uplift one another.

The event, held at the Dr. Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre in Awka, was themed “Accelerate Action for Gender Equality” with a sub-theme, “Projecting Anambra Women Achievers: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.” The gathering brought together women from diverse sectors and emphasized the need to empower women and the girl child to ensure their voices are heard in society.
In her opening remarks, NAWOJ Anambra Chairperson, Comrade Tochukwu Ifejika, highlighted the pivotal role of women in reshaping society. She called for increased opportunities for women to occupy leadership roles across various sectors.
The event’s Chairman, Professor Kate Omenugha, Acting Vice-Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, and the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, echoed similar sentiments. They urged women to ensure no woman or girl child is left behind, stressing the importance of collective support in amplifying female voices.

A major highlight of the celebration was the recognition of outstanding women — both living and deceased — who have made significant contributions in various fields. Among those honoured were:
• Dr. Nonye Soludo – Wife of the Anambra State Governor
• Dame Virgy Etiaba – Former Governor of Anambra State
• Professor Chinyere Okunna – Renowned academic and media expert
