Onitsha South, February 26, 2025 – Tension is rising in Onitsha South as tricycle operators (Keke riders) accuse Mayor Emeka Orji of intimidation, extortion, and defiance of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s directives.
According to the Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria (TOAN), Mayor Orji has been unlawfully imposing a ₦200 sanitation levy on Keke riders, despite the Governor’s clear directive that no additional levies should be collected after taxes have been paid. Riders claim that their resistance to this illegal fee has been met with violence and threats.

Earlier today, when the Keke riders collectively refused to comply with the illegal demand, Mayor Orji allegedly deployed armed personnel from a group known as Operation Udo Kachi. The situation escalated when the operatives reportedly fired live rounds at unarmed riders, further fueling fears of oppression and lawlessness in the area.

“We are simply trying to earn an honest living, but Mayor Orji is treating us like criminals. His actions show complete disregard for Governor Soludo’s policies and the well-being of the people,” a TOAN representative stated.
The Keke riders are now calling on Governor Soludo, security agencies, and other relevant authorities to urgently intervene and put an end to the extortion and intimidation. They insist that they remain strong supporters of the Governor and believe he will take swift action against the mayor’s alleged misconduct.

The situation raises serious concerns about governance in Onitsha South and whether Mayor Orji’s actions are a direct challenge to Governor Soludo’s administration. Observers will be watching closely to see how the government responds to this growing crisis.
