The Chairman of Onitsha Main Market, Hon. Chijioke Okpalaugo, has visited victims of Tuesday’s tragic incident at the market, offering solidarity and support to the injured currently receiving treatment at FMC Onitsha and Multicare Hospital, Omagba.

Speaking during the hospital visits, Hon. Okpalaugo expressed deep regret over the incident and criticised attempts by some political actors to exploit the tragedy for electoral gains. He particularly pointed at the YPP candidate, Paul Chukwuma, alleging that he stormed the market with his team to stir unrest.

“I was able to repel such gory behaviour from the YPP candidate and a few others. I took control of the situation, and as we speak, I will keep going round the hospitals to ensure topnotch welfare of all the injured,” he stated.
He commended the Mayor of Onitsha North Local Government, Hon. Amalunweze Tony Nwora, for promptly depositing funds at the hospitals to support the victims’ treatment and for promising additional assistance if needed.

Hon. Okpalaugo further vowed to get to the root of the day’s events and urged the public to disregard false reports circulating on social media about multiple deaths. He clarified that only one life was regrettably lost.

“May her good soul rest in peace, Amen,” the Chairman said solemnly.
