Onitsha, Anambra State – What was expected to be a peaceful and colorful gathering of traders and stakeholders under the umbrella of the Anambra State Markets Amalgamated Traders Association (ASMATA) turned dramatic yesterday at the Chuba Ikpeazu (Achebe) Stadium, Onitsha, when two journalists engaged in a physical fight allegedly over ₦500.

Eyewitnesses told reporters that the altercation occurred midway into the event, drawing the attention of participants, security operatives, and fellow media practitioners. The confrontation was between a journalist from Nnewi and his Onitsha counterpart, and escalated quickly from a verbal disagreement to physical blows.
“It started like a joke. Before we knew it, both men were pushing and exchanging words loudly. Suddenly, it turned into a real fight. People were shocked, because we didn’t expect such from journalists,” an eyewitness recounted.
Security officials stationed at the stadium swiftly intervened to separate the warring parties and restore order. The incident briefly disrupted the event, but activities later resumed after calm was restored.
An ASMATA official, who preferred anonymity, described the incident as “unfortunate and embarrassing,” stressing that such conduct does not reflect the values of professionalism and decorum expected at public gatherings.
“This event was organized to showcase unity, growth, and collaboration among market leaders, traders, and the media.
We regret the distraction and assure the public that measures will be taken to prevent such an occurrence in future,” the official stated.
Meanwhile, senior members of the journalists’ union in attendance condemned the altercation, promising to investigate the matter internally.
The ASMATA event, which had drawn participants from across Anambra State, featured addresses from market leaders, discussions on trade development, and recognition of outstanding contributions within the market system. However, the fight has since overshadowed the highlights of the day, sparking public conversation about professionalism within the media.
