Mbaukwu, Anambra State – In an unprecedented act of generosity, the traditional ruler of Mbaukwu in Awka South Local Government Area, Igwe Peter Anugwu, has officially handed over his palace compound, including all its buildings, to the Pallottine Christian Community, a religious body under the Roman Catholic Church.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Igwe Anugwu stated that the two-storey building, which features 10 sitting rooms, 18 standard rooms, and a basement, was constructed over 44 years ago by a foreign company. He explained that his decision to donate the palace, except for the section where he resides, was a personal expression of gratitude to God for the prosperity he has enjoyed throughout his reign.
To ensure the occasion was well-documented and free from future disputes, Igwe Anugwu invited fellow traditional rulers, government representatives, and other key witnesses to the event. Among the dignitaries present was the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, a native of Mbaukwu, alongside several other traditional rulers who lauded the monarch’s gesture.
Observers have described this donation as a commendable initiative, considering the vast size of the palace and the fact that the Igwe’s children have all moved away. Many believe that the Catholic Church will put the structures to better use, ensuring they serve a meaningful purpose in the community. Furthermore, the decision to make this donation during the Igwe’s lifetime is seen as a strategic move to prevent potential family litigations and misunderstandings in the future.
This significant act of benevolence cements Igwe Peter Anugwu’s legacy as a ruler who prioritized faith and communal development over personal possession, setting an example of selflessness and devotion to the service of God and humanity.
