Awka, Igbo Land – In a passionate appeal to the residents of Awka South local government area, Senator Victor Umeh, the representative of Anambra Central Senatorial District, has called for an end to the alarming rise in cult activities and associated crimes plaguing the region. Speaking at the Awka City Security summit, convened by Henry Mbachu, the member representing Awka South 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Umeh emphasized that the Igbo nation is not known for wasting human blood.
The prevalence of insecurity has hindered the growth and development of Awka, the capital city, despite the presence of the Government House and other vital institutions. Shockingly, since January 2024, the area has witnessed the loss of at least 40 lives due to cult-related killings. Addressing the issue head-on, Umeh stressed that security concerns affect not only the economic prospects of the city but also its social fabric.
“Awka, like every other town designated as the capital of a state, is blessed. I implore you to take a stand in securing your land, ensuring the safety and happiness of residents and strangers alike,” said Umeh. He further emphasized the importance of a secure environment for businesses to thrive, highlighting that investment is unlikely to flourish in an insecure climate.
Cultism has long been a scourge in various parts of Nigeria, and its rearing of its head in Awka has raised concerns among residents and stakeholders alike. The senator’s call for the community to unite and combat this menace is crucial in dismantling the hold these criminal activities have on the area.
Umeh’s appeal serves as a reminder that the peaceful reputation of Igbo Land must be upheld. The Igbo nation, historically known for its rich cultural heritage, does not align with the senseless violence perpetuated by cult groups. It is up to the community to come together and take a stand against cultism, ensuring a brighter and safer future for Awka and all its residents.
As the senator’s words reverberate through the Awka South local government area, it is hoped that they will spark a renewed commitment to security, unity, and progress. Combating cultism requires a collective effort, and by addressing this pressing issue head-on, the people of Awka can reclaim their city’s peace and prosperity.
Let this be the turning point for Awka, where the community’s resolute actions serve as an inspiration for other regions dealing with similar challenges. Together, we can protect our land, preserve our culture, and create an environment conducive to growth, development, and genuine peace.
