As the world unites to observe World Mental Health Day on October 10, 2024, Hon. Engr. Sir (Dr) Ikenna Sylvester Ofodeme, Majority Leader and Member representing Ekwusigo State Constituency, has urged Nigerians to treasure their mental well-being. Speaking in recognition of this year’s global event, Ofodeme highlighted the urgent need for collective action in addressing mental health challenges.
He emphasized the role of awareness in combating stigma, stating, “It is our responsibility to treasure our mental health, and we must take action to ensure a better society, free from mental health issues.” This year’s theme, focusing on prioritizing mental health in the workplace, brings attention to the importance of mental well-being for both individual success and societal stability.
Hon. Ofodeme called for collaboration between governments, schools, and the private sector to create frameworks that support mental health in work environments. He believes that empowering employees to manage their mental health is crucial to fostering a productive workforce. “Mental health awareness must be championed by all stakeholders to provide the right environment where workers can thrive,” he added.
Moreover, he underscored the danger of substance abuse, particularly among youth, cautioning against the widespread use of illicit drugs such as “mkpuru mmiri.” He lamented that drug addiction has rendered many young individuals “useless and worthless,” contributing to criminal activity and insecurity within communities. “We must come together as a people to fight this common enemy before it is too late,” he declared.
Urging everyone to seek support when struggling with mental issues, Hon. Ofodeme stressed, “We can break the stigma and promote a healthier, more understanding world because your mental health matters a lot.” He encouraged those facing mental health challenges to reach out for help rather than suffer in silence, as unresolved emotional turmoil could lead to serious conditions like depression.
As we mark this important day, Hon. Ofodeme reminded everyone, “May we always share our problems with someone who can help us come out stronger and better, rather than keeping them inside and allowing them to grow into more significant issues.”
He concluded by wishing all Nigerians a happy World Mental Health Day, urging everyone to remember: “Always treasure your mental health.”
