Tragedy struck in Ondo State as Rev. Canon Olowolagba, his wife, and two children were abducted by gunmen along the Ise Akoko/Iboropa Road in Akoko North-East Local Government Area. The incident occurred last Sunday while the family was traveling from Ipesi to Ikaram.
The Bishop of Akoko Anglican Diocese, Babajide Bada, confirmed that the family was ambushed between Isua and Ise-Akoko and forcibly taken into the bush. The victims include the cleric’s wife, their 16-year-old daughter Goodness, a student at Adekunle Ajasin University, and their nine-year-old daughter, Idowu.
Church members became alarmed when the family failed to reach their destination, sparking concerns and leading to the discovery of their disappearance. The abductors later contacted the family’s associates, demanding a ransom of N75 million for their release.
Efforts Underway to Rescue the Victims
Local security outfits, including Amotekun, have mobilized in response to the abduction. Amotekun Corps Commander Adetunji Adeleye assured the public that his team is collaborating with local hunters and police to locate and rescue the victims.
“We are making every effort to secure the safe release of the family,” Adeleye said.
However, the Ondo Police Command spokesperson, Funmi Odunlami, stated that the incident had not yet been officially reported to any police station. Despite this, community leaders and residents are rallying to assist in rescue efforts.
Calls for Unity and Prayers
The incident has drawn widespread concern, with religious leaders urging prayers for the victims’ safety. Sheikh Basiru Aminu, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Akoko North-West Local Government, called on the community to unite in prayer and support.
“This is a time for all religious leaders and community members to come together for the safe return of the family,” Sheikh Aminu stated.
Community on Edge
This abduction has heightened fears of insecurity in the Akoko area, a region already grappling with sporadic cases of kidnapping. Residents have called on authorities to increase security patrols and address the rising wave of violence in the state.
As of now, there have been no updates on the status of the victims or the ransom negotiations. Security agencies continue their search efforts, while the community remains hopeful for the safe return of Rev. Canon Olowolagba and his family.
