In a historic and unifying gesture, the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has restored the name of Abakaliki Street in Awka, reversing a 2018 decision that renamed the street “Club Road” during the administration of former Governor Willie Obiano.

The move comes as part of Governor Soludo’s broader commitment to preserving cultural identity and historical landmarks across the state. Abakaliki Street, first cleared and graded in 1975 by Pa. Peter Uzodimma, has long stood as a symbol of unity and mutual respect between the people of Anambra and neighboring Ebonyi State.

Pa. Uzodimma, who personally oversaw the street’s development and officially registered it with the then-authorities, expressed deep appreciation for the governor’s action. “Abakaliki Street is more than a name; it is my contribution to history,” he remarked.

The renaming of the street in 2018 had sparked public criticism, with community members and stakeholders calling for its restoration as a gesture of reciprocity and historical acknowledgment. Many viewed the original name as a tribute to the longstanding relationship and cultural ties between the two Southeastern states.

Governor Soludo’s reversal has been met with widespread commendation from residents, cultural advocates, and leaders in both Anambra and Ebonyi States. By reinstating the original name, Soludo is seen to be promoting peaceful coexistence, cultural pride, and regional solidarity.

This move adds to the governor’s growing record of community-responsive leadership and his unwavering dedication to safeguarding Anambra’s heritage. In restoring Abakaliki Street, he has not only honored an elder’s legacy but also sent a strong message of inclusiveness and mutual respect.

Governor Soludo reaffirmed that the identities and stories of streets and communities matter, adding that his administration will continue to protect the historical landmarks that define Anambra’s collective memory.
