The Spiritual Director of the Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry in Uke, Anambra State, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma, popularly known as Ebube Muonso, has launched a stinging response to the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Law Mefor, following the latter’s article branding him a “fake prophet” and blaming him for contributing to the state’s insecurity.
The rift between Ebube Muonso and Governor Chukwuma Soludo has intensified in recent weeks after the priest openly criticized the government for its handling of security challenges. During his New Year message, Ebube Muonso called on Soludo to urgently address the security crisis or resign for someone more capable to take over. This public call did not sit well with the governor’s administration and supporters.
In response, Mefor penned a critical article titled “Ebube Muonso, Fake Prophet and Insecurity”, accusing the priest of promoting a culture of “wealth without work” through his teachings, which he claimed undermine the traditional Igbo values of hard work and perseverance. Mefor argued that such messages were fueling insecurity in Anambra and the South East at large.
“The new wave of insecurity in Anambra in particular and the South East has its roots in preaching wealth without work, championed by the likes of Fr. Emmanuel Obimma,” Mefor wrote. “They are merchants of fake miracles and fake prophecies, teaching youths that they can achieve wealth and greatness without effort or morality. These wrong teachings are eroding the virtues that have long defined Ndigbo.”
However, the outspoken Ebube Muonso did not take the accusations lightly. Addressing his congregation on Wednesday, the priest sharply criticized Soludo’s administration, accusing it of incompetence and failure to deliver on its promises.
“Anambra, once a leading state in the South East, is now falling behind. Just recently, the President commissioned projects in Enugu. What do we have in Anambra to commission? Substandard roads and the blood of innocent citizens killed by kidnappers. This government has no achievements to showcase,” he declared.
Turning his focus to Mefor, the fiery cleric dismissed the commissioner’s accusations and issued a stern warning. “It is good that I am the one they are attacking. Let me tell you, they will meet their end soon. Instead of confronting the real issues like insecurity, they are busy attacking a man of God. Just yesterday, two Reverend Sisters were kidnapped in Ajalli. This government has failed completely.”
The ongoing conflict between the priest and the government reflects the deepening frustration among some citizens over the state’s security challenges. Ebube Muonso’s criticisms have resonated with many, while supporters of Governor Soludo argue that his administration is making significant efforts to address the issues.
Observers believe the controversy underscores the complex relationship between religious leaders and political authorities in the region, as well as the growing public demand for accountability and tangible results in governance.
