Abuja, January 15, 2025 – The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga, has died at the age of 59 after a brief illness. The announcement was made in a statement by the House Spokesman, Akin Rotimi, on Wednesday evening.
Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, was described as a visionary leader and a passionate advocate for her constituents.
“It is with profound sorrow that the House of Representatives announces the passing of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga, who, until her demise, served as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House,” the statement read.
Born on December 2, 1965, Onanuga was first elected to the House in 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). During the 9th Assembly, she served as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, where she championed policies aimed at empowering women and advancing social welfare.
Re-elected in 2023, Onanuga took on the role of Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly. Her colleagues praised her for demonstrating exceptional leadership and legislative discipline, particularly during parliamentary sittings.
Fondly known as “Ijaya,” Onanuga was admired for her intellect, humility, and relentless drive for excellence. “Her impactful contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape reflected her passion for creating a better society and her tireless dedication to public service,” the statement added.
The House extended condolences to her family, friends, associates, and the people of Ogun State, especially the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency.
“As we mourn the loss of this vibrant and committed lawmaker, her legacy of service and dedication will continue to inspire future generations,” the statement concluded.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by her family in due course. May her soul rest in perfect peace.
