The Defence Headquarters has responded to a viral video in which former Niger Delta militant Asari Dokubo claimed he could shoot down military aircraft. The video, which surfaced following the recent local government elections in Rivers State, shows Dokubo alleging that aircraft flying over his residence were meant to intimidate him because of his support for the elections. According to Dokubo, “The federal government knows that I can bring down any aircraft.”
In a statement addressing these claims, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, described Dokubo’s remarks as “laughable,” adding that the ex-militant was simply “blabbing” and lacks the capability to challenge the military or bring down its aircraft. Buba emphasized that the military operates professionally and within democratic frameworks, utilizing aircraft and helicopters for national security operations. He also noted that security agencies regularly employ aerial resources to ensure the safety of the country.
Regarding Dokubo’s claims, Buba stated that the responsibility for addressing such statements lies with the appropriate authorities, who will handle the matter accordingly.
In the same briefing, Buba responded to concerns over reports that 13 repentant Boko Haram members had escaped from a rehabilitation camp, some allegedly armed with rifles. He clarified that the military does not oversee the Deradicalization, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration (DRRR) program, which handles former militants. Despite this, he assured the public that the necessary measures are in place to ensure the program’s effectiveness and maintain security.
The Defence Headquarters reiterated its commitment to upholding national security and professional standards in its operations across the country.
