Awka, Anambra State — On September 25, 2024, the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, received the Head of the Department of Forensic Science from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, calling for officers to engage in self-development courses to enhance their policing efficiency. During the meeting, CP Itam emphasized the importance of retraining officers to adopt modern-day policing strategies and acquire new skills for effective crime prevention and the protection of lives and properties.
The CP highlighted the need for continuous education and capacity-building within the force, stressing that officers must be well-equipped with advanced skills in forensic science, crime investigation, and the latest policing techniques. He urged personnel to take advantage of opportunities for professional development, stating, “Acquiring new skills is essential to keeping pace with evolving crime patterns and enhancing the efficiency of our service delivery.”
CP Itam also referenced his ongoing commitment to the capacity development of Anambra State Police Command personnel. The Command has implemented a mandatory training program in batches, focusing on areas such as Police duties, acts and regulations, musketry, riot drills, foot drills, use of firearms, and human rights. These training sessions are aimed at building officers’ courage and confidence, particularly in confronting armed criminals and responding to distress calls.
The visit from Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s Forensic Science Department underscores the Commissioner’s vision for integrating academic expertise into policing practices, offering a platform for officers to gain knowledge from experts in forensic science and related fields.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Command, echoed the CP’s call for continuous learning, noting that this partnership with academic institutions is part of a broader initiative to improve the capacity and professionalism of the police force in the state.
As the Anambra Police Command continues to prioritize personnel development, officers are encouraged to embrace these opportunities for self-improvement and contribute to the ongoing transformation of policing in Nigeria.
