In a strongly-worded response to an article titled “The Billionaire Police Commissioner” written by Olusegun Adeniyi and published in ThisDay newspaper, CP Aderemi Adeoye (rtd) vehemently denies all allegations made against him. Adeoye accuses Adeniyi of spreading falsehoods and engaging in a campaign to tarnish his reputation.
The article, published on May 2, 2024, alleged that CP Aderemi Adeoye announced during his Pull Out Parade that he was a billionaire and claimed that he would surpass Aliko Dangote as the richest man in Africa. Adeoye asserts that these claims are completely fabricated and that he never made such statements. He accuses Adeniyi of failing to adhere to journalistic ethics by not cross-checking facts or providing him with an opportunity to respond before publishing the article.
Furthermore, Adeoye disputes Adeniyi’s assertion that their investment club, Alpha Trust Investment Club, is not registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). Adeoye states that the club is indeed registered and questions why Adeniyi did not contact them for verification before making such claims.
Regarding the allegations about his shareholding in the investment club, Adeoye clarifies that he does not ascribe shares to himself and that he holds less than the number of shares mentioned in the article. He accuses Adeniyi of relying on online trash and not seeking verification from club officials or independent sources.
Adeoye also criticizes Adeniyi for referencing a petition against him without contacting the police authorities to whom the petition was addressed. He argues that this demonstrates Adeniyi’s lack of objective research and his willingness to support an agenda against him.
Expressing disappointment in the journalist’s conduct, Adeoye mentions that the instigators of the blackmail campaign have praised Adeniyi’s article on social media, potentially compromising the reputation of ThisDay newspaper.
Adeoye concludes his response by stating that he intends to take legal action to defend his reputation and deter others from making baseless claims without evidence. He emphasizes that the article only reflects Adeniyi’s personal opinion and does not represent the position of ThisDay newspaper.
It remains to be seen how this dispute will unfold, but CP Aderemi Adeoye is determined to clear his name and hold Olusegun Adeniyi accountable for the alleged defamation.
