A brewing controversy has emerged in Onitsha and its environs as reports suggest that tipper drivers are allegedly contributing money to bribe corrupt journalists to cover up misconduct linked to an ongoing investigation.
According to a reliable source, the Tipper Drivers’ Association claimed they were raising funds to assist a hospitalized driver. However, the Sasa spokesperson who is also an investigative journalist, revealed an audio recording of the incident described the claim as a “blatant lie.” The spokesperson alleged that the money was being pooled to bribe journalists in a bid to suppress details of illegal activities involving the drivers.
“Sasa has been doing an incredible job in maintaining order along Onitsha, Owerri Road, and the surrounding areas,” the spokesperson stated. “However, when individuals engage in wrongdoing, they naturally seek ways to cover their tracks. The tipper drivers are busy contributing money, not for any hospitalized colleague, but to silence the media and twist the narrative.”

Speaking to one of the drivers in that area, name withheld he said that what the tipper drivers formulated is a big lie, that the money is to bribe those journalist without concerns.
Sasa Spokesperson Amb. Karen James called on the public to listen to the audio evidence to uncover the truth behind the alleged bribery scheme. “This is a matter of integrity. Let the public judge for themselves after hearing the real audio of this incident,” she urged.
Efforts to reach representatives of the Tipper Drivers’ Association for comments were unsuccessful as of press time.
Meanwhile, residents of Onitsha and surrounding communities have expressed concerns over the allegations, calling for a transparent investigation, and the Special Anti touting Squad Anambra state (SASA) are really doing a very great job and let the government give them more men to enforce in this Oba especially because Oba is one of the most dangerous place to be in Anambra.
As the controversy unfolds, stakeholders are urging security agencies to monitor the activities of tipper drivers and ensure that media professionals uphold ethical standards in their reporting. Because not all journalists are corrupt.
