The Commissioner of Police for the Anambra Command, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, welcomed the Anambra State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof Sylvia Chika Ifemeje, to his office at the Police Command Headquarters in Awka on 6th August 2024. The visit was aimed at fostering a stronger relationship between the Police Command and the Ministry of Justice in the administration of the justice system in Nigeria.
Recognizing the crucial role played by the Ministry of Justice in the justice system, CP Itam expressed his desire for a continuous working relationship with the ministry. He emphasized that collaboration between the police and the ministry is essential for the prompt trial of cases, granting of bails, and the speedy dispensation of justice, ultimately leading to the decongestion of correctional centres across the state.
During the meeting, CP Itam highlighted the importance of cooperation between the Police Command and the Ministry of Justice in ensuring an efficient and effective justice system. He underscored the need for both entities to work together to address the challenges currently faced by the system, including case backlog and overcrowded correctional facilities.
In response, Prof Sylvia Chika Ifemeje expressed her gratitude for the warm reception and noted the significance of the visit. She commended CP Itam for his commitment to promoting collaboration and synergy among relevant stakeholders in the administration of justice. Prof Ifemeje assured the Commissioner of her ministry’s readiness to work closely with the police to achieve the desired goals of prompt trials, fair bail procedures, and the expeditious dispensation of justice.
Furthermore, CP Itam stated that his office would provide the necessary support and resources to facilitate the smooth functioning of the justice system in Anambra State. He also promised to ensure the welfare and security of lawyers and other officers of the Ministry of Justice during the discharge of their duties.
The visit ended on a positive note, with both the Commissioner of Police and the Attorney-General expressing their optimism about the collaboration and the positive impact it would have on the justice system in Anambra State. The CP urged other relevant actors in the justice sector to emulate the Ministry of Justice in fostering partnerships to enhance the administration of justice in Nigeria.
In his closing remarks, CP Itam thanked SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, for disseminating the news and reaffirmed his commitment to building a strong and enduring relationship with the Ministry of Justice for the betterment of the justice system in the state.
