Tragedy struck in Anambra State as Rev. Fr. Tobias Okonkwo, a Catholic priest with the Diocese of Nnewi, was fatally shot by unidentified gunmen. The attack occurred on Thursday evening, December 26, along the Ihiala axis of the Onitsha—Owerri Road.
The grim news was confirmed in a statement signed by the Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Raphael Ezeogu, and made available to journalists on Friday, December 27.
“Fr. Tobias was gunned down yesterday evening by yet-to-be-identified assailants,” the statement read. “We solicit your prayers and Holy Masses for his eternal joy. May Fr. Tobias rejoice in Paradise forever. Amen. May God console the bereaved. Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.”
Until his untimely death, the 40-year-old priest, who hailed from Ekwulumili community in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, served as the Manager of the Schools of Nursing, Midwifery, and Medical Laboratory at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala.
The tragic killing has sent shockwaves through the Catholic community and beyond, prompting calls for justice and heightened security measures along the Onitsha—Owerri Road, a known hotspot for violent attacks.
As investigations into the incident continue, the Diocese of Nnewi has urged the faithful to pray for the repose of Fr. Okonkwo’s soul and for peace in the region.
