The Anambra State Road Traffic Agency (ARTMA) has expressed regret over the conduct of three of its officers who were caught on camera fighting with a police traffic personnel over money given to them by a motorist. The incident, which occurred at Aroma Junction in Awka, the capital city of Anambra State, caused a gridlock and attracted a crowd.
A video of the incident went viral on social media, showing four female traffic wardens, comprised of three ARTMA officials and one police traffic personnel, exchanging blows while in uniform. Some of the money being fought over fell from the pockets of the traffic wardens, and people at the scene were seen grabbing the naira notes.
The video sparked reactions from the public, who condemned the unprofessional behavior of the officers. In response, the management of ARTMA, led by MD/CEO Engr. Emeka Okonkwo (Konti), issued a statement expressing disappointment in the incident. The agency stated that the actions of the personnel involved did not align with the agency’s standards and values.
ARTMA conducted a thorough investigation into the matter and subsequently suspended the personnel involved pending further disciplinary actions. The agency assured the public that it is dedicated to maintaining order and ensuring effective road and traffic management in Anambra State. It acknowledged the negative impact the incident may have had on public trust and affirmed its commitment to delivering reliable and professional traffic management.
