The Anambra State Police Command has intensified the enforcement of third-party insurance policies for motorists with the launch of Operation Velvet, a strategic initiative aimed at tackling car theft and ensuring adherence to traffic rules and regulations. This initiative was formally introduced today, February 25, 2025, by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc MNIPS PhD.

Following the expiration of the grace period granted to motorists by the Police and other traffic law enforcement agencies to obtain their third-party insurance certificates, Operation Velvet has been activated to address issues such as traffic congestion, car theft, and widespread disregard for road safety regulations across the state.

According to CP Orutugu, this initiative is designed to promote responsible driving habits, provide financial protection for accident victims, curb car theft, and safeguard the properties of motorists within the state. The enforcement of third-party insurance policies aligns with the provisions of Section 68 of the Insurance Act 2003, ensuring compliance with national legal requirements.

Several key agencies are collaborating on this enforcement drive, including the Police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Attorney General’s Office, the Motor Licensing Office, Anambra Road Maintenance Agency, Nigeria Civil Defense Corps, and other traffic-related bodies in the state. Their joint efforts aim to restore order, discipline, and safety on Anambra’s roads, creating a more secure and efficient commuting environment for residents and visitors alike.

Speaking on behalf of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer, emphasized that Operation Velvet is a crucial step toward enhancing road security and ensuring compliance with traffic laws.
The Anambra State Police Command urges all motorists to adhere to these regulations to avoid penalties and contribute to a safer transportation system in the state.
