In a decisive operation, the Anambra State Police Command has successfully rescued two female kidnap victims, aged between 15 and 19, and apprehended four suspects in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area. The operation, carried out by police operatives attached to the Oba Police Divisional Headquarters, took place on November 27, 2024, at approximately 11:54 am.
The suspects, including a notorious kidnapper identified as 19-year-old Ifechukwu Ibesimako of Aboji Village, Oba, were arrested shortly after the gang collected a ransom of ₦200,000 for the release of their victims. Preliminary investigations revealed that the gang lured their victims through social media, proposing friendships before holding them hostage and demanding ransoms from their families.
During the operation, police recovered incriminating items, including mobile phones used to coordinate the crimes. Investigators have uncovered evidence of similar activities, including a previous case involving another female victim who was released after paying ransom several months ago.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has called on youths to exercise caution when engaging with strangers on social media platforms. He further directed the immediate transfer of the suspects to the Anti-Kidnapping and Robbery Squad for comprehensive investigations.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer, commended the operatives for their swift action and reiterated the Command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of residents in Anambra State.
This operation underscores the Command’s determination to combat kidnapping and other criminal activities in the state, ensuring that perpetrators face the full weight of the law.
