In a significant move towards fulfilling the demand for local government elections in Anambra State, the Anambra State House of Assembly has passed the Anambra State Electoral Amendment Bill, 2024. This bill, after being subjected to three readings, has now taken effect, ensuring that the election process will proceed swiftly.
During the debate on the bill, Sir Ikenna Ofodeme, the Majority Leader and representative of Ekwusigo Constituency, stressed the importance of this amendment in showing the state’s and Assembly’s commitment to expediting the forthcoming local government elections. Ofodeme further emphasised that the amendment’s primary objective is to address specific areas and enhance transparency and accountability for the people of Anambra during these elections.
Support for this amendment was voiced by Mr. Noble Igwe, the representative of Ogbaru Constituency One, and Mr. Patrick Udoba, representing Anambra West. Both legislators highlighted the timeliness of this amendment, highlighting the urgent need for the conduct of local government elections.
The bill was presented by the Speaker, Mr. Somtochukwu Udeze, and received unanimous support from the lawmakers through voice votes, reflecting a consensus on the importance of this electoral amendment. The passing of this bill signifies a turning point in the democratic process of Anambra State, as it paves the way for fair and inclusive elections at the local level.
The Ministry of Information in Anambra State, represented by Okeke, Agunwa, and Abugu, has commended the House of Assembly for its swift action in passing the Electoral Amendment Bill. They believe that this legislative milestone will revitalise and strengthen the democratic system in the state, ensuring greater representation and participation of the people in local governance.
With the Anambra State Electoral Amendment Bill now in effect, all eyes are on the upcoming local government elections. This development is seen as a step towards building a more transparent and accountable government, one that responds to the needs and aspirations of the people of Anambra.
