The Anambra State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Joyce Nnennaya Alexander, has reaffirmed her dedication to enhancing the road safety behavior of motorists in the state. During a meeting with a delegation from the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) State Chapter, Alexander emphasized that her focus would be on improving road safety consciousness among the people of Anambra, rather than on the number of daily bookings for traffic infractions.
Alexander stated, “I have come to spread the message of safety and ensure the citizens obey traffic laws because every traffic regulation is for the safety of the citizens. Within the next three weeks, FRSC will engage in public enlightenment, and I am expressly partnering with NAWOJ. I am not interested in the number of bookings per day but in the improved road safety behavior of Ndi Anambra.”
Expressing her delight at receiving the NAWOJ delegation, Alexander, who recently assumed office as the 15th substantive Sector Commander in the state, expressed her gratitude for being in the midst of the female journalists of the state. She noted her experience as the face of FRSC throughout her career and her understanding of the power of the media, especially women.
The Sector Commander also highlighted ignorance and recklessness as major factors contributing to road crashes, stressing the need for government support to enable the Command to function more effectively.
The Chairperson of NAWOJ, Comrade Tochukwu Ifejika, explained that the visit was to welcome the new Sector Commander and to foster closer working relations between NAWOJ and FRSC in promoting road safety. Ifejika commended Alexander as the first female Sector Commander in the state and acknowledged her remarkable achievements in rising through the ranks to attain this position.
Furthermore, Ifejika emphasized the role of the media in public enlightenment and urged the FRSC Command to utilize various media outlets to spread the message of road safety. She expressed optimism that fatal road crashes would significantly decrease during Alexander’s tenure and called for stricter enforcement of the use of seat belts and prevention of drunk driving and other reckless behaviors by motorists.
The partnership between the FRSC and NAWOJ is expected to create a seamless and effective road safety campaign in Anambra State, ensuring the safety of all citizens on the roads.
