Awka, Anambra State – The Anambra State Police Command has raised alarm over the rising wave of false and exaggerated security reports being circulated on social media platforms and other public channels by certain individuals and groups, with the deliberate intent of spreading fear and discrediting the efforts of security agencies in the state.
In a strongly worded statement released on Wednesday, the Command expressed deep concern that such actions are not only unpatriotic but strategically aimed at undermining ongoing security operations and eroding public confidence in the capability of law enforcement officers to safeguard lives and property.
According to the Command, these deliberate acts of misinformation pose a significant threat to peace and order in the state. “We are aware of the coordinated attempts by some individuals to incite panic through the spread of falsehoods disguised as security alerts,” the statement read. “Such behavior is malicious and will no longer be tolerated.”
The Command noted that a comprehensive security assessment is currently ongoing across various parts of the state. As part of this initiative, security operatives will begin identifying and exposing those responsible for sharing unverified, inciting, or fear-mongering security content.
“Individuals or groups found culpable will be investigated, exposed, and prosecuted under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015 and other relevant laws of the federation,” the statement emphasized.
The Police Command urged residents to desist from forwarding or publishing unverified security claims and instead utilize official police communication channels to verify information or report suspicious activities.
“Security is a shared responsibility. We call on citizens, the media, and online influencers to act responsibly and avoid becoming tools in the hands of those seeking to destabilize the state,” it added.
Reassuring the public, the Command reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting all residents of Anambra State. It also restated its dedication to upholding professionalism, transparency, and accountability in all policing activities.
