The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a pregnant woman who was allegedly detained by her husband at a security office in Okija over accusations of theft.
The incident came to light after a video of the woman’s ordeal went viral, prompting swift action from the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam. The CP ordered an immediate rescue operation and directed a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the case.
Speaking on the matter, CP Itam condemned the actions of certain members of the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG), criticizing the unlawful detention and inhumane treatment of suspects. He expressed his determination to address the root causes of such incidents and assured the public that measures are being put in place to prevent a recurrence.
“This kind of indiscriminate detention and mistreatment of individuals is unacceptable. We are committed to ensuring that any unprofessional behavior by AVG members is checked and that necessary disciplinary actions are taken,” CP Itam stated.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, also confirmed that efforts are underway to collaborate with relevant authorities to regulate the activities of vigilante groups in the state and uphold human rights.
The rescued woman is reported to be in stable condition and receiving necessary care. The Anambra State Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting citizens and upholding the rule of law while ensuring that law enforcement agencies operate within legal and ethical boundaries.
Investigations into the incident continue, with assurances from the police that anyone found culpable will face appropriate sanctions.
