In a landmark event, Anambra State conducted its first local government election in 11 years on September 28, 2024, a significant step towards restoring grassroots governance in the state. The election, which attracted a massive turnout, has garnered mixed reactions from stakeholders, but one of the key voices celebrating the process is Barrister Harold Chiedu Ekwerekwu, a prominent member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
After casting his vote in Onitsha, Ekwerekwu expressed his joy and satisfaction with the election, emphasising its peaceful and orderly conduct. “I am incredibly happy with how the election turned out. After 11 long years, we finally have a local government election that was both successful and peaceful. I must thank the governor of Anambra State for making this happen and extend my gratitude to Ndi Onitsha for coming out in large numbers to vote without any chaos,” Ekwerekwu said.
The election is viewed as a major victory for Governor Charles Soludo’s administration, which had promised to restore democratic processes at the local level. Many residents and stakeholders are hopeful that this marks the beginning of a new era of effective local governance in the state. Ekwerekwu added, “This is the beginning of a good local government regime in Anambra State, and I believe it will bring positive changes to our communities.”
While APGA members and some voters celebrated the election’s success, the process was not without controversy. Opposition parties such as the APC and Labour Party raised concerns about transparency and fairness, even threatening legal challenges. However, the high voter turnout and peaceful atmosphere during the election were seen as major positives, particularly in a state where elections have often been contentious.
With the local government elections now concluded, attention will shift to how the newly elected officials manage their mandates, as residents anticipate a new chapter in grassroots governance across Anambra State.
