In a bid to uplift the condition of widows in Anambra State, the Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, has called for legislation to protect the rights and well-being of widows. This comes as the global community marks International Widows’ Day, a day dedicated to creating awareness about the challenges faced by widows and developing resources and policies to empower them.
Rt. Hon. Udeze, in his goodwill message on behalf of the State Legislature, commended the United Nations for dedicating a day to widows and raising awareness about the difficulties they face. He also extended his gratitude to Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his wife, Nonye, for their efforts in prioritizing the issues concerning women, particularly widows, and working towards providing a better life for them.
Notably, Anambra State already has a law in place to prohibit widowhood malpractices, and Rt. Hon. Udeze urged traditional rulers in the state to abolish any harmful and obnoxious laws against widows in their communities. By doing so, they will contribute to creating a safe and supportive environment for widows.
Furthermore, Rt. Hon. Udeze called on affluent citizens to join in the effort to uplift the condition of widows by making contributions in their own capacity. He emphasized the importance of widows comporting themselves and looking up to God for their protection and well-being.
As International Widows’ Day draws attention to a vulnerable and marginalized group, it is hoped that the advocacy of the Anambra Assembly Speaker will pave the way for legislative reforms that guarantee the rights and well-being of widows in the state and beyond.
