Awka, April 10, 2025 — In a strategic move to strengthen public safety and promote tourism in Anambra State, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc MNIPS PhD, has partnered with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to engage the Anambra State Restaurant and Bar Owners Association on critical security concerns.
The landmark meeting, held on Thursday at the Police Command Headquarters in Awka, focused on enhancing security along Club Road, Awka—a popular nightlife and leisure zone—and other key entertainment corridors and tourist destinations across the state.

In his address, CP Orutugu emphasized that intelligence reports indicate that certain hospitality spots are being exploited as rendezvous points by criminal elements. He urged bar and restaurant operators to step up surveillance within their premises, report suspicious individuals, and collaborate actively with law enforcement agencies.
“We are committed to protecting lives and property, but we need your cooperation. Security is a collective responsibility. With increased patrols and improved surveillance, we can secure these public spaces and preserve Anambra’s growing reputation as a safe destination,” the CP stated.

Hon. Don Onyeji, Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, commended the initiative, describing it as timely and essential for the growth of Anambra’s hospitality and tourism sectors. He noted that with unique sites like Agulu Lake, Ogbunike Cave, and the Igbo Ukwu Museum, the state stands as a cultural and natural treasure trove that must be protected.
“This partnership is a significant step toward making Anambra safer for both tourists and residents. We’ll continue to work closely with the Police Command to achieve this,” Onyeji said.
Representatives of the Restaurant and Bar Owners Association expressed strong support for the new measures and pledged to begin implementing the directives immediately. They also welcomed the opportunity for continued collaboration with law enforcement agencies to ensure their businesses operate safely and responsibly.
The meeting was attended by top security officials including DCP Ibrahim Ezekiel (Operations), ACP Tochukwu Umeh (State Intelligence Department), Hon. Kingsley Ezika (SSA to the Governor on Security – Anti-Cultism), and senior members of the Association.
According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, the Anambra State Police Command is determined to keep communication lines open with stakeholders and maintain proactive strategies to ensure safety across the state.
This partnership marks a new chapter in community-driven policing—where security, hospitality, and tourism meet for the common good of Anambra State.
