In the heart of Nigeria’s southeastern region, Anambra State has recently witnessed a remarkable transformation in its law enforcement landscape. The duo of Commissioner of Police CP Ikioye Orutugu and the newly appointed Commander of the Rapid Response Squad and Anti-Kidnapping Squad (RRS/AKS), CSP Orede Mathew Chidubem, has ushered in a new era of crime control and community safety. My investigation reveals a significant reduction in criminal activities as these leaders adopt a no-nonsense approach to policing that prioritizes accountability and proactive crime-fighting measures.

CSP Orede Mathew Chidubem took command of the RRS/AKS with a clear mandate: to restore public confidence in law enforcement and effectively combat the rising tide of crime that had plagued the state. Formerly known for its controversial practices under the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), the RRS/AKS has undergone a complete overhaul in both behavior and operational standards since CSP Chidubem’s arrival.
During my observations, it was evident that the squad has adopted a community-oriented approach, engaging with residents and local leaders to rebuild trust. The once-feared law enforcement unit has reportedly become a symbol of hope and safety for the people of Anambra. Reports indicate that crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnappings have significantly diminished, a feat attributed to the rigorous enforcement and strategic operations led by CSP Chidubem and his team.

Statistics and local testimonies corroborate the positive trend in Anambra’s crime levels. “In the past, residents lived in constant fear of kidnappers and robbers,” a local merchant shared. “But now, we sleep with our doors unlocked, feeling safe in our homes.”
As I conducted my investigation over several weeks, I witnessed firsthand the commendable diligence of the RRS/AKS officers. With nearly daily apprehensions of suspected criminals, the team has made it clear that criminal activities will no longer be tolerated. The RRS/AKS has become adept at intelligence-gathering, allowing them to anticipate and thwart criminal plots before they can materialize.
One of the most significant changes noted during my investigation is the apparent eradication of corrupt practices within the RRS/AKS. Residents expressed relief and satisfaction that officers are no longer engaging in unethical behavior or extortion. This shift is attributed to CSP Chidubem’s firm stance against corruption and his commitment to transparency.
The cooperation and unwavering support from CP Ikioye Orutugu play a crucial role in this turnaround. A leader known for his action-oriented mindset rather than empty rhetoric, CP Orutugu has set a strong example, fostering an environment that empowers officers to act decisively and ethically. Together, this dynamic duo has effectively restored public trust in the police force, reinforcing the notion that law enforcement is there to protect and serve the community.
As I reflect on the transformations occurring in Anambra State, it is vital for the local government and citizens to continue supporting these positive changes. The roads towards sustained peace and safety require collective effort and vigilance. Community engagement, feedback, and cooperation with law enforcement are essential components to ensure these advancements are maintained.
With the leadership of CP Ikioye Orutugu and CSP Orede Mathew Chidubem, the RRS/AKS in Anambra State stands as a beacon of hope for a crime-free society. Their commitment to ending criminality, coupled with the dissolution of corrupt practices, promises a brighter future for the region. As an advocate for truth and accountability, I, Ambassador Karen James, am proud of the advancements in Anambra and optimistic about the potential for a more secure environment for all its residents.
Anambra’s journey signifies that with the right leadership and community collaboration, sustainable change is not only possible but achievable.
