Awka, Nigeria — Police operatives from the Special Anti-Cultism Squad in Enugu-Ukwu achieved a major breakthrough on December 6, 2024, with the arrest of a notorious gang member and the recovery of a deadly weapon. Acting on credible intelligence, the team apprehended Miracle Mwakalor, an 18-year-old from Umubele village in Awka-South Local Government Area, and recovered an AK-47 rifle and a magazine concealed in the ceiling of an apartment.
The operation took place around 2:30 PM as officers stormed the gang’s hideout in Nibo, Awka-South, where they were allegedly planning an attack. While Mwakalor was apprehended, his accomplices managed to escape.
During interrogation, Mwakalor confessed to his involvement in criminal activities and directed police to an apartment at Ubuofu, Awka, where the rifle was hidden. The weapon was recovered from the ceiling, providing evidence of the gang’s intent to carry out further violence.
According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining members of the gang. “The arrest and recovery underscore our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the people. Further updates will be provided as investigations progress,” Ikenga stated.
This arrest highlights the growing challenge of combating armed criminal gangs in the region. Authorities are urging the public to provide any additional information that could aid in the apprehension of the fleeing suspects.
