In a significant security operation on Thursday, December 5, 2024, the Anambra State Joint Security Team intercepted armed men along the Umuchu-Amesi-Uga Road. The operation led to the recovery of a branded blue Hilux vehicle with Plate Number GDD 440 TJ, suspected to have been stolen from a member of the public.
The swift intervention followed an attempted attack on a police checkpoint at Ajali, Orumba North Local Government Area. Security forces repelled the assault, prompting the armed men to flee. During the ensuing pursuit, the suspects abandoned the vehicle, which contained coolers designed for food preservation.
The operation came at a cost, as one police officer and an Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG) operative sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation. Both are receiving treatment in a hospital and are reportedly in stable condition.
Additionally, two operational vehicles belonging to the AVG were destroyed in the encounter, having been caught in a fire sparked during the clash.
Joint operations in the area are ongoing to ensure the security of residents and apprehend those responsible. Further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
The Anambra State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, commended the resilience and bravery of the security personnel involved in the operation.
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities to authorities to aid in maintaining peace and safety in the state.
