In a significant move aimed at enhancing governance and economic planning, the Anambra State House of Assembly has passed two crucial bills: the Anambra State Local Government Administration Bill, 2024, and the Anambra State Economic Planning and Development Bill, 2024.
The Local Government Administration Bill was passed during today’s plenary session in Awka, following the presentation of a report by the Joint House Committee on Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Affairs, alongside the Judiciary and Justice Committee. Speaker of the Assembly, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, highlighted that the bill clearly defines the roles and powers of local government chairmen and councillors in relation to both state and local government areas.
Key sectors, such as primary education, healthcare, and pension services, were emphasized as areas where the bill will strengthen collaboration between local and state governments. Hon. Patrick Udoba, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government, stressed that the bill is designed to empower local councils to function more efficiently and effectively, reinforcing their role within the broader governance structure.
In parallel, the Assembly also passed the Economic Planning and Development Bill, which establishes a board to support the state’s economic growth. The board will collaborate with local government areas to manage budgets, finances, and state projects, while providing assistance to the governor in overcoming economic challenges.
These legislative actions signal a renewed commitment to improving governance at the grassroots level and ensuring sustainable development across Anambra State.
