In preparation for the upcoming Local Government elections in Anambra State, members of the Anambra State Vigilante Group (AVG) have been instructed to abstain from participating in election security duties. This directive was given by the state’s Service Commanders during a joint press conference held at the State Police Command Headquarters in Awka by federal security agencies.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Nnaghe Obom Itam, speaking on behalf of the security agencies, emphasised that vigilante operatives, being part of local communities, could have political affiliations that might compromise the neutrality of the electoral process. “Vigilante operatives are not involved in election security because they are members of the communities and may have political interests. Some of them are even candidates in the election. They should go out and cast their votes for their preferred candidates,” CP Itam clarified.
During the conference, the federal security agencies also announced the implementation of movement restrictions across the state on election day. The restriction, which will commence at 6 a.m. and end at 4 p.m., is intended to ensure safety and prevent any potential security breaches. The CP assured the public of “massive deployment” at strategic entry points and within the state to maintain order.
CP Itam further urged Anambra residents to embrace the election process peacefully and assured that security personnel would be on the ground to provide a safe environment for voters. “We want to create an enabling environment for people to participate in the exercise and to avoid any breach of security. We urge Anambra people to come out and cast their votes for the candidates of their choice,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of the election, the CP noted that the reinstatement of local government administration through this election would restore the third tier of government and deepen participatory democracy.
However, due to ongoing security concerns, elections will not take place in certain areas of Ogbaru and Ihiala Local Governments. Communities like Lilu, Issekke, Akili-Ogidi, Mbosi, Azia, and Ubuluisiuzo are considered insecure. As a result, voters from these regions will cast their ballots at their local government headquarters.
The joint security agencies assured that sufficient personnel and patrols have been activated to guarantee the safety and success of the elections across the state.
