Prince Henry Odianosen Okojie, a federal lawmaker representing the Esan North-East/Esan South-East Federal Constituency in Edo State, has reportedly survived an assassination attempt at his Uromi residence. Okojie, who is also the husband of popular Nollywood star Mercy Johnson, was allegedly attacked on Friday morning by armed men believed to be political thugs.
The attack was confirmed by Okojie’s media aide, Michael Ihaza, in an official statement. According to Ihaza, the attackers arrived at Okojie’s residence in a Lexus GX 470 bearing a Rivers State registration number (PHC 253 FF). The statement detailed how the armed men, disguised as police officers, managed to enter the lawmaker’s sitting room, claiming to have an appointment.
However, the swift action of the security personnel assigned to Okojie prevented the attack from escalating. Two of the assailants fled the scene, leaving behind their driver and another accomplice, who were immediately apprehended and handed over to officers from the Nigeria Police Force’s Area Command in Uromi.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had made confessional statements, claiming that they were sent by political figures linked to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Esan North-East Local Government Area. The motive behind the attack is believed to be politically driven, but the exact reasons are still under investigation.
Efforts by the Pechilly Investigative Media team to get an official comment from the Edo State Police Command have so far been unsuccessful.
The failed assassination attempt has sent shockwaves through the local community and raised concerns about escalating political violence in Edo State. With elections on the horizon, tensions between rival political factions have been steadily growing, and this incident further underscores the volatility of the current political climate.
Supporters of Prince Okojie have condemned the attack, calling for a thorough investigation and urging the government to ensure the safety of political figures in the state. Meanwhile, the public is anxiously awaiting further updates as the police continue their interrogation of the captured suspects and expand their investigation into the incident.
