A tragic road traffic accident occurred on the Onitsha-Nteje-Awka Expressway at Zone 13 on the evening of 12th September 2024, claiming the lives of two individuals. The fatal crash, which took place around 7:00 PM, involved a private Toyota Camry with registration number UWN531AS and a commercial IVECO Turbostar tanker with registration number ADM619XA, driven by Sani Bappa.
According to an eyewitness account, the Toyota Camry suffered a brake failure, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The out-of-control car veered into the path of the tanker and collided violently, resulting in a devastating crash. There were four people involved in the accident—three male adults and one female adult. Tragically, one male adult and one female adult were killed on the spot, while the other two male adults were rescued unharmed.
Before the arrival of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) rescue team from RS5.33 Nteje, officers from the Dunukofia Division Traffic Office had already transported the deceased victims to the mortuary. Upon arrival, the FRSC rescue team cleared the scene, managed traffic, and towed the wrecked vehicles from the roadway to restore order.
Sector Commander of Anambra State, Corps Commander Joyce Nnennaya Alexander, expressed deep sympathy to the families of the victims. She urged motorists to prioritize vehicle maintenance and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent similar incidents. “Drive to save your life and the lives of others on the road,” she advised, emphasizing the importance of safety and caution for all road users.
