Musa Aliyu, Chairman of the Independent Corruption Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC), has emphasized the urgent need for a united effort to combat corruption in Nigeria. In a statement released by ICPC spokesman Demola Bakare, Aliyu stressed the commission’s decisive action against the threat of corruption and its commitment to tackling this societal menace head-on.
To further promote collaboration and strategize against corruption, the ICPC has invited Attorneys-General (AGs), Commissioners for Justice, and other relevant stakeholders from all 36 states to participate in a roundtable discussion set to be held in Abuja on Monday. The summit aims to address Nigeria’s corruption issues comprehensively.
The AGs Summit, organized by the ICPC with support from the MacArthur Foundation, centers around the theme “Building a Unified Front Against Corruption in Nigeria.” The strategic plan, as outlined by Aliyu, aims to reinforce anti-corruption efforts across all governmental levels and foster cooperation between the ICPC and AGs nationwide in advancing the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS).
Underlining the significance of the event, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, will grace the summit as the special guest of honor. Additionally, Kanu Agabi, former AGF, will deliver the keynote address, with a dynamic panel discussion led by Moyosore Onigbanjo, former Lagos State AG.
The AGs Summit seeks to provide a platform for robust discussions, knowledge sharing, and the exchange of best practices in the fight against corruption. With corruption posing a significant challenge to Nigeria’s development and progress, the need for a united front, consisting of both governmental and non-governmental stakeholders, is critical.
By forging strong partnerships and fostering collaboration between law enforcement agencies, legal practitioners, and policy-making bodies, the ICPC aims to enhance the effectiveness of anti-corruption measures and strengthen Nigeria’s Anti-Corruption Strategy. Together, it is hoped that these concerted efforts will pave the way for a corruption-free Nigeria, fostering sustainable socio-economic growth and a more just society for all citizens.
