In a press conference held at the Anambra State Police Command Headquarters in Awka, the Commissioner of Police, Cp Nnaghe Obono Itam, addressed the public on the command’s efforts to combat crime and improve security in the state. Joined by his strategic officers, Cp Itam expressed gratitude to the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD NPM, for entrusting him with the responsibility of serving as the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State.
Cp Itam emphasized that his role as Commissioner of Police comes at a critical moment in the nation’s history, and he is fully dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of the people of Anambra. Since assuming office, the Commissioner and his team have conducted a thorough review and evaluation of policing capabilities, as well as identified potential threats to critical assets within the state.
Through robust synergy with other security agencies, such as organized vigilante groups and relevant stakeholders, the Anambra State Police Command has embarked on meticulous intelligence gathering to tackle crime head-on. Cp Itam specifically commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his commitment to security-conscious governance.
In just 60 days, the command has made significant progress in reducing crime and criminal activities. Over 200 suspects have been apprehended for various crimes, resulting in five convictions with ongoing trials. Additionally, four kidnapped victims have been rescued unharmed, and a substantial amount of illegal firearms, ammunition, stolen vehicles, motorcycles, and money have been recovered.
Cp Itam highlighted the importance of training and retraining officers and men in the command to enhance operational proficiency and equip them with the necessary skills for effective crime prevention. The command has also conducted a security summit with various informal security sectors, including vigilante groups and hunters, to foster an all-inclusive policing system.
Community policing and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms are being emphasized to address specific problems and enhance collaboration between the police and the public. The Commissioner assured the residents and visitors of Anambra State that every individual deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, in line with the principles of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD NPM.
Cp Itam expressed gratitude to the judiciary and the state government for enacting laws against cultism and harassment, aiming to deter such activities and protect innocent individuals. He also emphasized the importance of the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) program, which aims to sensitize youths on the dangers of engaging in illicit groups and vices.
Finally, the Commissioner acknowledged the crucial role of the media in peace and security. He urged journalists to verify information with the Public Relations Department of the Command before sharing content on social media. Cp Itam also warned individuals involved in criminal activities to reevaluate their choices, as the command is determined to hold them accountable.
In conclusion, the Commissioner reiterated that there are no unknown gunmen in Anambra State, and those who terrorize innocent citizens must face the consequences of their crimes. With the support and collaboration of the public and the media, the Anambra State Police Command is committed to creating a safer environment for all.
