In a heartbreaking turn of events, the Maguya Day Secondary School community in Chipata District, Zambia was left in shock as a dedicated 46-year-old teacher allegedly took his own life. Panford Mweetwa, who had recently been transferred to Maguya from Nsanjika Day Secondary School, left behind a gut-wrenching note expressing his deep despair and frustration at his perceived lack of achievement. The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at Mwami turn off, sending shockwaves through the community.
Confirming the tragic incident to the media on Friday, July 5, Eastern Province Police Deputy Commanding Officer, Stephen Mayoko, provided further details surrounding the unfortunate incident. According to Mayoko, the deceased informed his wife that he was headed into Chipata town. However, around 10pm, Panford Mweetwa was discovered unconscious.
Prompt action was taken, and Mr. Mweetwa was quickly rushed to Katandala clinic for immediate medical attention. Due to the severity of his condition, he was later transferred to another hospital where he was admitted. While undergoing treatment, the anguished teacher managed to disclose that he had ingested an unknown poisonous substance with the intention of ending his own life. Sadly, he succumbed to the poison, passing away on the same day.
The community, colleagues, and students of Maguya Day Secondary School were left devastated by the loss of a beloved teacher who had dedicated himself to the education and well-being of others. His untimely death has raised questions about the challenges teachers face and the need for additional support systems within the education sector.
As investigations into this tragic incident continue, the body of Panford Mweetwa remains in the mortuary, awaiting final arrangements for burial.
