Journalists in Anambra State have praised Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo for his decision to absorb the staff of the defunct National Light Newspapers into various ministries and government agencies before closing down the Anambra Newspapers and Printing Corporation. The unanimous commendation came during the monthly Congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (Anambra State Council) in June.
In a communique jointly signed by the State Chairman of NUJ, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, and the State Secretary of the Union, Mr. Aloysius Ofodile, the journalists applauded Governor Soludo for taking the necessary steps to ensure the continued employment of the organization’s staff. However, they advised the Governor to initiate the process of establishing a new digital National Light Newspaper that aligns with the demands of the 21st century, providing employment and returns on investment in service delivery while reducing running costs.
In addition to their commendation, the journalists praised Governor Soludo for his remarkable development efforts and improved road infrastructure in the state. They did, however, urge him to pay attention to strategic roads and carry out palliative works on those that have failed.
The journalists also used the opportunity to call on communities in flood-prone areas of the state to adhere strictly to directives and early warnings from agencies such as NIMET. They further appealed to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to remain vigilant and be prepared to save lives in the event of a flood.
During the Congress, the journalists expressed appreciation for Chief Godwin Ezeemo, a philanthropist who funded the construction of the Godwin Ezeemo International Press Centre, also known as the NUJ Secretariat Complex in Awka. They prayed for Chief Ezeemo’s continued blessings and expressed their desire to institute and host ‘Godwin Ezeemo Day’ every November to honor his generosity, although they noted that he has not given his approval for this initiative.
The communique also reminded all qualified journalists in Anambra State to join the union and maintain good financial standing to avoid any embarrassing situations. It also warned media organizations to hire certified members only and highlighted the issues caused by non-certified individuals in the field of journalism.
The Congress concluded by congratulating Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu on his appointment as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and expressing support for his pro-students and workers’ policies. The Congress urged Prof. Ikechebelu to address any avenues of extortion from students and called on those around him to support his success.
Finally, the communique expressed concern over rising violent crimes and attacks on innocent citizens by non-state actors in the state. The journalists appealed to state security agencies to take immediate action to minimize the loss of lives and property.
Overall, the journalists applauded Governor Soludo for his actions and provided constructive advice to promote good governance and enhance the welfare of journalists and citizens in Anambra State.
