Suspected hoodlums who have been wreaking havoc on electrical fittings, cables, and galleries in recent weeks in Onitsha have reportedly fled the area following the deployment of 250 security operatives to these flashpoints. The hoodlums, believed to be responsible for the vandalization, were said to have gone into hiding after news of the security deployment reached them.
According to eyewitnesses, a day after the Transition Committee Chairmen were relieved of their appointments, these hoodlums targeted the garden opposite Ziks Place at Onosi Onira, as well as three other parks and gardens in the area. They vandalised electrical fittings, cables, and galleries used for beautification purposes. Motorists and some security operatives reported that these acts of vandalism were carried out during late nights and early mornings when there was less traffic.
Jonah Nwafor, a commercial bus driver, stated, “A day after the dissolution of the Transition Chairmen in Anambra, electric cables and wires around that area were totally vandalised. This time around, the galleries that provide beautification and protection around the garden are gradually being vandalised.” Other drivers also confirmed that these incidents took place during off-peak hours, when few cars and buses were on the road. Several roadside barriers and blocks were also pulled down along the route from Eggerton through Ani-Onitsha, Muokwe park, and The Young Park.
In response to these incidents, the newly appointed Transition Committee Chairmen have deployed over 250 security operatives, including the police, vigilante groups, and the Anti-Touting Squad. Their primary objective is to track down the hoodlums and bring them to justice, as well as recover the vandalised items. Chief Emeka Joseph Orji, the Chairman of Onitsha South local government area, expressed determination to restore law and order in the region, working closely with his counterpart in Onitsha North.
“We know that those hoodlums and miscreants have been celebrating that we are no longer in office, but we are back, and they know the grave consequences,” Chief Orji declared. He further warned that anyone found to have purchased the vandalised items would be considered an accomplice in the crime. Market leaders have been instructed to conduct undercover investigations to identify traders who may have bought these items, emphasising that such actions aid and abet criminality in Onitsha, a prominent commercial city.
The deployment of the large number of security operatives signifies the commitment of the government to restore peace and order in the area. It is hoped that their efforts will deter future acts of vandalism and ensure the safety and security of residents and businesses in Onitsha.
