Enugu State Government has dismissed speculations that it declared today as a public holiday or sit-at-home day. The statement came amidst threats by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to commemorate the Biafra Day in the South-East region. Anambra and Imo states Police commands have deployed their personnel to offices and schools to counter any potential threat to lives and property.
The Enugu State Government, Anambra, and Imo state Police commands issued a joint statement clarifying their stance on the matter. The Enugu State Government emphasized that failure of workers to report for duty today would result in summary dismissal in accordance with the Public Service Rules. The government expressed concern about the impact of such actions on the academic pursuits of students, especially those currently taking part in the ongoing Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations.
A circular issued by the Enugu State Government urged all workers to prioritize their duties and ensure the unrestricted movement of residents. The government assured the public of adequate security measures to maintain peace and order.
The government’s warning comes almost a year after a similar clash between Governor Peter Mbah and IPOB, which resulted in casualties and the disruption of socio-economic activities.
Enugu State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Aka Eze Aka, reiterated the state’s zero-tolerance for illegal IPOB activities. He urged residents and students to carry on with their normal activities and exams without fear, assuring them of maximum security.
Aka expressed concern over IPOB’s call for the postponement of the WAEC General Mathematics exam, stating that denying children their right to education is offensive. He emphasized that education is the ticket to the future and a fundamental right that should not be compromised.
The Enugu State Government, recognizing the contributions of the Igbo people in industry, education, and human capital development, finds any action or pronouncement that hinders the children’s access to education worrisome. Aka urged the people to reflect on the sacrifices of the Igbo founding fathers and fallen heroes, who would be dismayed by such actions.
Today, the people of Enugu State are encouraged to go about their daily activities and examinations without fear, as the government has taken necessary security measures to maintain peace and protect lives and property.
