The global campaign for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is in full swing as communities around the world mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The annual event, which runs from November 25 to December 10, seeks to raise awareness and mobilize efforts to eliminate violence against women and girls in all forms.
This year’s theme, “Unite to End Gender-Based Violence,” emphasizes collective action and societal change. Speaking at a gathering to commemorate the campaign, Her Excellency Apostle .Prof Elizabeth Pedro passionately called for an end to violence against women, highlighting the value and dignity of womanhood.
“It is not a good thing to fight or abuse women,” Apostle Pedro stated. “All genders are one, and it is a great privilege to be a woman in this world. Women deserve respect, protection, and opportunities to thrive without fear of violence or discrimination.”
Gender-based violence remains a pressing global issue, with statistics from the United Nations indicating that one in three women experiences physical or sexual violence in her lifetime, often at the hands of an intimate partner. This pervasive problem underscores the urgent need for sustained efforts to combat harmful cultural norms, promote gender equality, and strengthen legal protections for women and girls.
The 16 Days of Activism provide a platform for governments, organizations, and individuals to unite in advocating for change. Activities include community outreach, education programs, survivor support initiatives, and policy advocacy aimed at addressing the root causes of gender-based violence.
Apostle Pedro emphasized the power of collective action, urging communities to break the silence surrounding violence against women. “The world must come together to reject violence in all its forms. It is time to stop the suffering and create a world where every woman feels safe, valued, and empowered.”
The campaign is a reminder that achieving gender equality requires ongoing commitment from all sectors of society. As the 16 Days of Activism continue, voices like Her Excellency Apostle .Prof Elizabeth Pedro’s echo the call for unity, compassion, and action to end violence against women and build a safer, more equitable world for all.
